Basics of Tennis Explained
Tennis is a sport that involves at least two players, and sometimes four if you’re playing doubles.
Tennis is a sport that involves at least two players, and sometimes four if you’re playing doubles. The essential equipment needed includes a tennis ball, a tennis racquet, and a tennis court. Each player will also need tennis shoes and appropriate tennis attire. This minimal requirement makes tennis a relatively light sport to play compared to football, which requires a significant amount of heavy equipment.
A regulation tennis court must be used to ensure consistency in size and maintenance, preventing games from being affected by the court’s conditions. The net is placed in the center of the court, and there are service lines that run parallel to the net on either side. Further back, on the outer edge of the court, are the baselines, which indicate where players typically begin playing.
The sides of the court are marked by lines that delineate the outer edges, known as the alleys. It’s essential to understand the difference between singles and doubles play. In singles tennis, the alley is considered out of bounds; if a ball hits the alley, it is immediately a fault. However, in doubles tennis, the alley can be used without penalty, which can significantly affect the outcome of the game. To start a game, you need at least two players to serve the ball. A successful serve requires hitting the ball into the opponent’s side of the court, specifically into the service box on that side. Each player has a service box on their left side, and regardless of who serves, the ball must land in that box. The ball must bounce at least once in the service box for the serve to be valid. If it does not, the serve must be repeated.
Once the ball has successfully landed in the service box, the primary aspect of tennis begins: players hit the ball back and forth across the court. The goal is to prevent the ball from bouncing out of bounds or hitting the alley in singles play. To score points, you must ensure that you hit the ball when it reaches you. If you fail to return the ball while your opponent does, they will gain a point.
Each time a ball is missed, it must be served again. Players will take turns serving, ensuring that both get an equal opportunity throughout the match. This overview provides a basic understanding of how tennis is played, although it does not cover specific scoring rules or strategies.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Sport: A Comprehensive Comparison
Discover the world of sports through a detailed comparison of major athletic activities, examining factors such as enjoyment, social interaction, family involvement, difficulty level, skill requirements, talent, cost, accessibility, recreational and competitive play, facilities, health benefits, and career opportunities. Whether you’re looking for fun, fitness, or a future in sports, this guide will help you find the perfect match for your personality and lifestyle.
The Spectrum of Sports: Individuality Meets Team Spirit
Sports are a universal language, transcending borders and cultures, and they can be broadly categorised into individual and team-based activities. While individual sports like golf, swimming, tennis, boxing, badminton, and track and field focus on personal achievement, team sports such as basketball, baseball, football, rugby, cricket, and hockey emphasise collaboration and teamwork.

Global Appeal and Gender Preferences
Certain sports boast a global following, with football, tennis, and track and field events enjoying widespread popularity. However, sports preferences can vary by gender. While boys and men generally engage in a wide array of sports, girls and women often gravitate towards tennis, football, volleyball, track and field, golf, gymnastics, and swimming, with tennis holding the title as the most favoured sport among females.
Navigating the Degree of Difficulty
The complexity and challenge of sports can vary greatly. Football, for instance, is renowned for its simplicity in both rules and gameplay, making it accessible to many. Despite these differences, one truth remains constant across all sports: mastering any athletic endeavour and reaching the pinnacle of professional play is an arduous journey.
According to ESPN’s Degree of Difficulty Project, which rates sports based on ten skill components, the following sports rank from most to least difficult:
Key Success Factors Across Sports
The path to success in sports is paved with a unique blend of skills, talent, and physical attributes. Here’s a snapshot of what it takes to excel in various sports:
- Tennis: Coordination, Agility, Endurance, Power, Speed
- Football: Agility, Endurance, Speed, Coordination
- Volleyball: Coordination, Agility, Power, Height
- Gymnastics: Flexibility, Nerve
- Lacrosse: Speed, Agility, Endurance
- Swimming: Speed, Power
- Golf: Power, Coordination

Recreational vs. Competitive Sports
While all sports can be enjoyed recreationally, some offer more opportunities for casual play. Golf, basketball, tennis, football, cycling, running, volleyball, billiards, and table tennis are among the most popular recreational sports.
Competition levels can vary by country and region, with the number of participants often correlating with the degree of competitiveness. However, exceptions like boxing exist, where fewer participants engage in a highly competitive environment. Globally, the most competitive sports, in order of intensity, are football, basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, swimming, volleyball, cricket and rugby.
Health Benefits and Injury Risks
Engaging in sports can significantly enhance both physical and mental health, with stress relief and mental rejuvenation being common benefits across various activities. When it comes to physical health, sports like football, basketball, hockey, swimming, tennis, and lacrosse offer the most benefits, while golf provides lower physical health advantages.
Injury risks, however, are an inherent part of sports, with contact sports typically resulting in more injuries. Hockey, lacrosse, football, and basketball are among the sports with the highest injury rates, while golf is considered one of the least injury-prone sports.
